João Costa was born on October 8, 1996, in Oliveira de Azeméis. He began his musical studies at the age of 8 at the music school of the Bissecular Banda de Música de Santiago de Riba-Ul, under the guidance of Professor Nuno Costa. In 2012, he completed the 5th grade at the Oliveira de Azeméis Music Academy, and that same year he enrolled in the professional program for wind and percussion instruments at the Jobra Music Conservatory, in Professor Abílio Liberal’s class, which he completed in 2015 with a grade point average of 20. He then enrolled at the Higher School of Music and Performing Arts (ESMAE), in Professor Sérgio Carolino’s class, where he had the opportunity to perform in a wide variety of ensembles, such as the ESMAE Symphony Orchestra, where he worked with conductors including António Saiote, José Eduardo Gomes, Javier Viceiro, and Andreas Stoehr, among others. He was awarded first prize in the Senior division in 2018 at the “Terras de La-Salette” International Wind Instrument Competition. He teaches at the Santa Cecília School of Music in Carregosa and at the Santiago de Riba-Ul Band School of Music. He currently performs with the Symphonic Band of the Amigos da Branca Musical Recreational Association (ARMAB) and the Carregosa Band.
