Katy Jones
Trombone
Formerly Co-Principal Trombone with the London Symphony Orchestra, Katy is currently Principal Trombone with the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester, UK. Her career has taken her to concert halls worldwide, and she can also be heard on numerous film scores, including The Marvels; Star Wars, Revenge of the Sith; and the Harry Potter Series.
As a young student, Katy won the Don Lusher Prize in the BBC Big Band Competition, BBC Young Musician of the Year Brass Prize, and was a finalist in the Shell/LSO competition. More recently she has received the Sheila Tracy Award; Teacher of the Year; and Player of the Year awards, from the British Trombone Society Membership. An alumni of the Gustav Mahler Jügendorchester, she is a member of Fine Arts Brass, and a regular guest with many other UK orchestras, plus the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.
Senior Tutor at RNCM, Katy is also a brass tutor with the National Youth Orchestra and the OAcademy. She was lead brass tutor at the Grafenegg Academy 2025, and will be a member of the jury at the Aeolus Competition in Düsseldorf in September 2026.
Katy has a Master’s Degree in Pharmacy, and was awarded a Senior Fellowship at the RNCM to recognise the broad scope of her work. She is qualified to teach the Buteyko method and has presented successful lectures and workshops for students and professionals of all instruments. Katy is the recipient of the 2026 ITA Award, which is given to acknowledge an elite level of playing, teaching and research.
