Luís Oliveira was born in Águeda.
He began his musical studies at the Escola Profissional de Artes da Beira Interior, continuing them at the National Academy of Orchestra.
He obtained both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espectáculo (ESMAE) in Porto, where he studied under Sérgio Carolino.
He is a founding member of the Portuguese Tuba Ensemble How Low Can You Go?! and the brass quintet Carnyx Brass.
He has participated in masterclasses with leading figures of the tuba world, including Sérgio Carolino, Roger Bobo, Gene Pokorny, Daniel Perantoni, Steve Rossé, Mel Culbertson, Roland Szentpáli, Shmuel Hershko, Anne Jelle Visser, and Øystein Baadsvik, among others.
He has performed with several youth orchestras, notably Aproarte Orchestra and BISYOC (British Isles Youth Orchestra Course) in England. He was also a member of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester under the artistic direction of Claudio Abbado.
As a guest musician, he has performed with Orquestra do Norte, Orquestra Filarmonia das Beiras, Orquestra Clássica do Centro, and Ensemble Orquestral do Porto.
He regularly collaborates with the Porto Symphony Orchestra Casa da Música, Gulbenkian Orchestra, Portuguese Symphony Orchestra, Portuguese Philharmonic Orchestra, and Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa.
He has worked with internationally renowned soloists and conductors such as Boris Berezovsky, Håkan Hardenberger, Alisa Weilerstein, Thomas Hampson, Simon Trpčeski, Mário Laginha, and Yuja Wang, as well as conductors including Olari Elts, Heinz Holliger, Mikhail Jurowski, Joana Carneiro, Michael Sanderling, Lawrence Foster, Philippe Jordan, James Tuggle, Christoph König, Peter Rundel, Joseph Swensen, Eivind Gullberg Jensen, and Gerard Schwarz, among others.
Luís Oliveira was awarded at the 1st National Wind Competition “Terras de La Salette”.
He has performed in Portugal, Spain, England, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Brazil, and Argentina.
He has also led masterclasses and training courses in Vouzela, Águeda, Castro Daire, Santa Comba Dão, Troviscal, Branca, Espinho, Castelo de Paiva, and Chaves.
He currently teaches tuba at the Coimbra Music Conservatory, the Escola Profissional de Artes da Covilhã, and the Instituto Piaget in Viseu.
