Mário Costa was born in 1986 in Viana do Castelo. He began studying drums at the age of eight. He studied classical percussion at the Viana do Castelo Professional School of Music, and in 2004 he began his career as a drummer in Porto. He completed the Jazz Drums course at ESMAE in 2008, studying under Michael Lauren.

In 2008, he moved to New York and took private lessons with Iann Froman, Rodney Green, Ari Hoening, Eric Harland, John Riley, and Hal Crook, in addition to attending workshops with Je? Ballard, Adam Cruz, Peter Erskine, Greg Bissonet, Dom Famularo, Vera Figueiredo, Billy Hart, Alexandre Frazão, Marc Miralta, Allan Ferber, David Freedman, Billy Coabhan, John Riley, and Dan Weiss.

In 2010, he presented his first project, titled “Homo Sapiens,” at Casa da Música. Mário Costa has won awards in several percussion and drumming competitions.
