Paulo Perfeito, trombonist, composer and educator, was born in the city of Porto in 1974. His musical studies began at the Banda Marcial da Foz do Douro, continuing at the Porto Conservatory of Music and later at the Porto Jazz School.

After attending Jamey Aebersold's Summer Jazz Workshop in 1996, Paulo was encouraged to continue his jazz studies at Berklee College of Music, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 2001. In 2007 he earned a Master of Music degree at the New England Conservatory, and in 2017 a Doctor of Musical Arts at the prestigious Eastman School of Music.

His research work includes notably Jazz Harmony and Plasticity: Chord-Scales, Nonfunctional Progressions and Modulatory Fields, presented at the EuroMAC 2014 conference in Leuven, Belgium; "Twentieth Century Compositional Techniques Applied to Jazz: Pitch-Class Sets in Jazz Composition and Improvisation," presented at EuroMAC 2017 in Strasbourg; and "Jazz Harmony: Polymodal Quintessence," presented at the ENIM 2018 conference.

Among the numerous awards he has received are the DownBeat Student Music Award in 2013, the Marian McPartland Scholarship, the Fulbright Scholarship, the Herb Pomeroy Award for Outstanding Jazz Composer and Arranger, and the Young Creators Grant from the National Center for Culture (Bolsa Jovens Criadores do Centro Nacional de Cultura) in 2000 and 2001.

His work as a composer is partly published by Editions Bim – International Music Publishing, and features in a now sizeable body of recordings, notably including Bodhi Suite for Jazz Sextet and Steel aLive! Vol. II, in which Sergio Carolino and the Porto Orchestra – Casa da Música perform his concerto Impermanentia for tuba and orchestra.

He collaborates/has collaborated with several institutions, including ESMAE, the Matosinhos Jazz Orchestra, the Espinho Music Academy, Casa da Música, the European Movement Jazz Orchestra, the University of Aveiro, the Jobra Conservatory and the Sines School of Arts. He leads the Nu Jazz Orchestra and the Paulo Perfeito Sextet.
